FAQs

What is hypnotherapy?

Hypnosis involves being placed into a relaxed state that allows your therapist to talk to your subconscious mind. Being in a trance is very relaxing. It is a bit like when you are watching your favourite film or TV programme in that you are become totally focused on that one thing. With hypnosis your focus is on being very relaxed both mentally and physically while being able to hear and be aware of everything that is said.

Being in a trance means that we can work and communicate directly with your subconscious mind where memories and motivations are stored along with your ability to learn. By communicating directly with your subconscious mind, it is possible to achieve the goals you set out at the beginning of the session and resolve any underlying issues you may have had in a positive, goal-orientated way.

Is it safe?

Yes, it is completely safe. You can hear everything that is being said and have the ability to come out of the trance if needed. Although hypnosis looks like sleep, it is a very different state. There is no danger of not waking up as you are not asleep to begin with and no chance of you being made to do things you don't want to. You are in control the whole time.

What will happen in a session?

Firstly, we establish your goal to fully understand what the issue is. From this we'll learn what you need to do more or less of or completely re-learn to help you achieve your goals. This will involve being asked some questions to help us understand where you are and where you want to be. You can also ask any questions you might have so that you are completely comfortable. When we are ready we will begin hypnosis to help you achieve your goal. We will give you some tools and techniques that you can do by yourself at home to further increase your success.

Is it confidential?

Yes, it is completely confidential. The hypnotherapist may take some notes for, but these are securely stored and not shared with the public. It relies on the same type of doctor-patient confidentiality that all therapies are subject to.

How many sessions will it take?

On average 3-6 are needed for a full program of treatment, but sometimes more or less sessions are required, depending on the individual and their needs. Hypnotherapy is an effective therapy but it also depends on your motivation and desire to change. Your hypnotherapist will want to help you in the minimum number of sessions possible. You and the hypnotherapist will review your progress so that at any time you can make a valued judgement about how the therapy is progressing.

What will it feel like?

It feels great! It is a pleasant, relaxing and enjoyable experience. Some clients describe it as being like an enjoyable daydream, and some enjoy it so much that they want to stay for longer in that relaxed state. You remain aware and in control at all times and leave relaxed yet alert.

Can anyone be hypnotised?

Yes, anyone can be hypnotised as long as they want to. In fact, you probably go into a trance several times a day yourself. A hypnotherapist cannot force you to go into hypnosis against your will so anyone wishing to seek a solution through hypnotherapy needs to come with an open mind and willing to fully participate.

Does it work with children?

Yes. Different language patterns are used depending on the age of the child to ensure understanding. Children are increasingly finding anxiety and fear a factor in their lives. Hypnotherapy works particularly well in relieving these as it uses indirect metaphors and stories to produce changes which children are more accustomed to working with.

Where are you based?

We have a couple of therapy rooms that we use, one on Queen's Square and the other in Westbury-on-Trym. However, we can also make house calls and come to your residence for the therapy is that is more suitable. We can even use online contact for therapy through Zoom or Skype as well as the more traditional telephone. We aim to make it as inclusive and comfortable as possible for you. Just let us know when booking.

What happens if I cancel an appointment?

It's only natural that things crop up and clash. If you can't make an appointment then please let me know as soon as possible (at least 24 hours notice). As long as there is the 24 hour notice then there will be no charge for a cancellation. It may be that we are able to reschedule for another day/time or that we simply pick up or sessions at the next scheduled appointment. If the cancellation is with less than 24 hours notice then there will be a charge of 50% of the session fee. This is to cover the costs associated with the cancellation. This would also apply to any missed appointments that have not been cancelled.
